What is English for Specific Purposes?

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a learner-centered approach to teaching English as an additional language which focuses on developing English communication skills in a specific discipline, such as accounting, agrology, education, engineering, IT technology, and academic learning.  Students are also exposed to Canadian business or academic culture and real world communication practice.

ESP at The University of Winnipeg

The English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Program offers classes that focus on developing the language skills needed for success on the job, at college, or in university programs.

English for Professional Purposes

These classes focus on the development of job-specific English language skills for students who seek to enter or advance in their professions. Learn More

English for Academic Purposes

The University Preparation Program is designed for newcomers to Canada. If you plan to attend the University of Winnipeg as a student and English is not your first language, this program can help you develop your English skills. Learn More 

Eligibility Criteria for All Programs

All programs are free of charge for qualifying applicants. To qualify you must:

1. provide proof of one of the following:
  • Permanent resident status
  • Canadian citizenship
  • Refugee claimant status (proof of claim filed with the Immigrant Refugee Board)
  • Provincial Nominee status (Letter of Approval from the Province)
2. be a resident living in Manitoba
3. have a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7 or higher.  Please see our Guide for Language Assessment.

Please Note: Internationally Educated Professionals must provide documentation showing academic and professional background and must have a clearly articulated career plan indicating goals for working and registering in their field in Manitoba.
